Historical timeline

Five eras of World Cup history

1930–1950

The tournament takes shape

Uruguay won the inaugural edition in 1930. Italy became the first team to retain the title in 1938. No tournament was held in 1942 or 1946, and the 1950 edition ended with a final group rather than a standalone final.

1954–1970

Brazil reaches three titles

West Germany won its first title in 1954. Brazil then won in 1958 and 1962 before adding a third championship in 1970, becoming the first nation to reach that mark.

1974–1994

A new trophy and a wider field

The current trophy era began in 1974. West Germany, Argentina, Italy, and Brazil all won during a period that included memorable extra-time finals and the first final decided by penalties in 1994.

1998–2022

The 32-team era

France won on home soil in 1998, Brazil collected a fifth title in 2002, and Italy, Spain, Germany, France, and Argentina followed. The 2022 final became the third championship match settled by a shootout.

2026

The first 48-team edition

Canada, Mexico, and the United States hosted the expanded tournament. Spain defeated Argentina 1–0 after extra time to become world champions for the second time.

Title records after 2026

Brazil remain the record holders with five titles. Germany and Italy have four each, Argentina have three, and France, Spain, and Uruguay have two. England complete the list of champion nations with one.

Historical records combine West Germany with modern Germany for title totals while preserving the period name in edition-level results.
