Final-round decider
Penalty-shootout editions are separated from extra-time wins. The 1950 record remains a final-round decider because that tournament did not schedule a standalone final.
Teams that retained the title
Only Italy in 1938 and Brazil in 1962 won immediately after also winning the previous completed edition. “Retained” refers to consecutive tournaments, not simply winning more than once.
Champions on home soil
Six hosts became champions: Uruguay (1930), Italy (1934), England (1966), West Germany (1974), Argentina (1978), France (1998). The list uses the host identity recorded for that edition and does not treat a co-hosted tournament as a home title unless the champion was a listed host.
